What this category covers
Health Promotion and Maintenance covers helping clients stay well and recognizing expected changes across the lifespan. For the practical/vocational nurse this means collecting data about growth and development, contributing to prenatal and newborn care, reinforcing teaching about prevention and healthy habits, and recognizing risks that should be reported.
Key concepts
Growth and development
Know typical developmental milestones and age-related changes so you can recognize what is expected and what should be reported.
Prenatal and newborn care
Collect data at prenatal visits, reinforce teaching about warning signs, and support safe newborn care such as safe sleep and feeding.
Reinforcing teaching
The LPN/VN reinforces teaching that has been started and checks understanding, for example with teach-back. New or complex teaching plans are developed with the RN or provider.
Prevention and screening
Health promotion includes immunization principles, screening, and reducing risks such as tobacco use, falls and inactivity. Specific recommendations come from the client's provider.
