What this category covers
Basic Care and Comfort covers the everyday care that keeps clients comfortable and functioning. The nurse helps with activities of daily living, mobility and positioning, nutrition and hydration, elimination, hygiene and skin care, rest and sleep, pain data collection and non-drug comfort measures, enteral feeding care, palliative care, and postmortem care.
Key concepts
Mobility and positioning
Safe transfers, correct use of walkers, canes and crutches, and regular repositioning prevent falls, pressure injuries and other complications of immobility.
Nutrition, hydration and elimination
Monitor intake and output, follow diet orders and swallowing recommendations, and report changes in elimination patterns.
Pain and comfort
Pain is what the client says it is. Collect data with a consistent scale, use non-drug comfort measures, and re-check after interventions.
Palliative and postmortem care
Comfort care focuses on symptom relief and dignity. Postmortem care follows facility policy and respects cultural and religious practices.
