What these problems teach

Solid-dose problems use the same Desired ÷ Have × Quantity setup, where the quantity is one tablet or one capsule.

Whole tablets and capsules

Capsule answers here are always whole capsules. Tablet answers are whole tablets unless the question states: “For this educational problem, the tablet is scored and may be divided in half.” That sentence is part of the exercise. Whether an actual tablet may be split depends on the specific product and applicable instructions or policy.

Example with a conversion

0.25 mg ordered, 125 mcg per tablet

0.25 mg × 1,000 = 250 mcg

250 mcg ÷ 125 mcg × 1 tablet = 2 tablets

Common mistakes

  • Dividing before converting to the same unit.
  • Dividing Have by Desired (upside down).
  • Moving the decimal the wrong way between mg and mcg.
