What this category covers

Psychosocial Integrity covers the emotional, mental and social well-being of clients and families. It includes communicating therapeutically, supporting coping during illness and loss, caring for clients with mental health or substance use disorders, and keeping clients safe during a crisis.

Key concepts

Therapeutic communication

Open-ended questions, reflection and focusing on feelings help clients express themselves. False reassurance, giving advice, and asking “why” tend to shut conversation down.

Safety first in mental health

When a client talks about suicide or harming others, the priority is to ask directly, keep the client safe, and follow the facility's safety process.

Coping, grief and loss

Grief looks different for everyone. The nurse supports the client's own way of coping, respects cultural and spiritual practices, and watches for signs that coping is breaking down.

Substance use and withdrawal

Recognizing withdrawal early and using a nonjudgmental approach supports both safety and recovery.
