What this category covers

Management of Care is about how the nurse organizes and directs care so that clients get safe, timely, coordinated help. It includes deciding who to see first, which tasks can be assigned to other members of the team, protecting client rights, and communicating clearly across the health care team.

Key concepts

Prioritization

Priority questions usually turn on which client is unstable or getting worse. Airway, breathing and circulation problems, sudden changes, and findings that could lead to harm quickly come before stable, expected findings.

Delegation and supervision

The RN stays accountable for delegated care. Tasks that need nursing assessment, teaching, evaluation or clinical judgment stay with the RN; routine, predictable tasks for stable clients can often be delegated with clear instructions and follow-up.

Client rights and ethics

Informed consent, advance directives, confidentiality, and advocacy protect the client's right to make decisions. The nurse's role is to verify understanding, speak up when something is unclear, and involve the right people.

Communication and continuity

Structured hand-off tools such as SBAR, accurate documentation, and timely escalation keep information from being lost when care moves between people or settings.
